Rudy’s Flat

I’ve been fortunate in life to have four cousins my same age. Growing up, we got into all sorts of mischief and giggle fits and every time we saw one another we begged and begged our parents to let us have sleepovers. There was a large family camping trip every single summer. Those are among my favorite memories. My cousins and I have sung loudly near the cliffs of the Grand Canyon, ate delicious Huckleberry Ice Cream at Glacier National Park, piled rocks at Mesa Verde, and made fun of some random girl’s thong in front of Mount Rushmore.

An Icy Elephant Rock Hike

I’ve been a little MIA lately, but I blame it on Colton and I graduating and planning all our summer trips. And I’ve also flown to two sides of the U.S. and the other side of the world in the past three months, and the thought about organizing all those pictures and typing up posts can be rather daunting sometimes. 🙂

Wild Rose Trail

I wanted to get out of the house for a bit before the Superbowl today, so we picked out a new trail we’d never been on before. The Wild Rose trailhead was our destination, located on the benches of North Salt Lake.

Attempted Narrows Trip

Colton and I left our rainfly off because it was such a warm evening. I haven’t been desert camping in such a long time. Mountain camping is fun, but it’s so cold all the time. It was amazing to be able to look at the stars through my tent and only need my sleeping bag for warmth. It was amazing to wake up in the morning and not shiver even once, and get out of my sleeping bag to the same temperature of air. I woke up a while before everyone else and I just walked around our little campsite and marveled at the little details of the desert.

Bear Hollow 2014

We’ve been extremely busy this year. Sometimes the pressures of going to school, having full-time jobs, and trying to remodel a house leaves us with so little energy we just want to watch Parks and Rec on Netflix all day. Something that has really helped us this year is planning a weekend get-away every month and a half or so. Our September relaxing-time was spent waterskiing at Bear Hollow. Just the act of getting on the freeway and driving away from your home for a couple days relieves a lot of stress. Or, at least, puts off the nagging dishes and undone laundry for a while.

Jordanelle SUPing

The un-perk of being a student at the University of Utah is that your friends live all around the valley. It’s hard to plan things when you live half an hour away from each other and everyone is busy with school and work. We were excited when we were finally able to get together this weekend with Natalie and Tyler for a quick paddleboarding trip at Jordanelle Reservoir. We literally had to put it in our phone calendars a month in advance.

SUPing at Bear Lake

The day after the Summerfest, we drove up to Bear Lake to get in some more water skiing. Once again we beached half of us and took turns on the boat. Bree and Ben had rented some paddleboards from the U for the weekend, so Colton and I spent a lot of time on them.

Salt Lake City Bike Tour and Marathon

This year was the tenth annual Salt Lake Bike Tour, which corresponds with the annual Salt Lake Marathon. Colton, his dad, and I signed up to be Bike Marshals in the bike tour. Basically we wear vests and if someone needs help with a flat or gets hurt, we help them. At four in the morning, we woke up and drove to the start. The bike tour covers the same course as the marathon, and the course, when we’d done it before, was mostly downhill. This year however, there were little spurts of uphills. They wouldn’t have been too bad, but I decided to sign up for this marathon and bike it completely cold; the last time I’d been on a bike was last September. Brilliant idea, yes? I seem to have many lofty fitness goals that I don’t train for…
