UntitledSo, I’m nineteen. And I still LOVE Disney Princesses. It’s odd, because I always liked them as a little girl, but not as much as I do now. The last time we went to Disneyland (3 years ago), my mom and I were both more excited to get pictures of the Disney Princesses than my younger sister (who was the ideal age to be in love with the Princesses.) I have little Princess figurines in my room, and a Princess notebook a friend gave me last summer. I recently also participated in a Princess party for little girls with cancer and I and other teenage girls each dressed up as a Princess. I’m pretty sure I was way more excited to see all of us dressed up than the little girls were. Pathetic? Perhaps. However, it got me to thinking about why I actually like them in the first place. There’s the obvious fact that they’re all pretty and can all sing (at least the actresses behind screen), and they all have handsome princes. But what else? I supposed it’s because the Princesses, and all Disney characters in fact, represent my childhood. I lived and breathed Disney movies when I was young. I still enjoy watching them and singing along when Pocahontas breaks out in “Just Around The River Bend”. My recent years of high school and now college has brought about many changes. It’s hard to grow up. It’s hard to watch my first cousin getting ready to be married. It’s hard to watch some of my friends leave on an LDS mission for two years. It’s hard to leave behind a world of friends for college, where everyday is an encounter with complete strangers who don’t care about you and whom I don’t care much for either. My world of Disney Princesses is familiar and happy. Yes, there are hard things in life, but I’ve never had evil step sisters or been poisoned by an apple. Compared to the Princesses I’m living the dream life! The Princesses are a reminder to me to smile in life, sing a song here and there, and that there will always be a Happy Ever After. 🙂
