Colton and I made a quick stop at the Parowan Gap. Petroglyphs line the 600-ft tall cliffs, some estimated to be at least a thousand years old. It’s such a bizarre natural feature. The landscape all around the Gap is virtually flat, and all of a sudden the rocks just jut out of the ground. Then beyond that it’s completely flat again. Look at the satellite view of the map below. There’s literally NOTHING around. Oh except the Little Salt Lake. Never heard of it? Me either. Colton’s dad, who grew up in Parowan, told us that you used to be able to find old arrow heads all around the area.

Attempted Narrows Trip

Colton and I left our rainfly off because it was such a warm evening. I haven’t been desert camping in such a long time. Mountain camping is fun, but it’s so cold all the time. It was amazing to be able to look at the stars through my tent and only need my sleeping bag for warmth. It was amazing to wake up in the morning and not shiver even once, and get out of my sleeping bag to the same temperature of air. I woke up a while before everyone else and I just walked around our little campsite and marveled at the little details of the desert.

Bear Hollow 2014

We’ve been extremely busy this year. Sometimes the pressures of going to school, having full-time jobs, and trying to remodel a house leaves us with so little energy we just want to watch Parks and Rec on Netflix all day. Something that has really helped us this year is planning a weekend get-away every month and a half or so. Our September relaxing-time was spent waterskiing at Bear Hollow. Just the act of getting on the freeway and driving away from your home for a couple days relieves a lot of stress. Or, at least, puts off the nagging dishes and undone laundry for a while.

Labor Day Picnic: Street Tacos

Labor Day came around and we made plans to have a picnic at Liberty Park with some friends, Caleb and Megan. Colton made street tacos. It was a simple recipe and super yummy! He found it here at Simple Recipes. Megan and Caleb provided corn on the cob and the meal was perfect! We passed the time catching up and watching slack-liners cross from tree to tree. If you want a recipe with few ingredients to deal with and plenty of flavor, this is a great one to try out!

The un-perk of being a student at the University of Utah is that your friends live all around the valley. It’s hard to plan things when you live half an hour away from each other and everyone is busy with school and work. We were excited when we were finally able to get together this weekend with Natalie and Tyler for a quick paddleboarding trip at Jordanelle Reservoir. We literally had to put it in our phone calendars a month in advance.
